Useful information for year 5
P.E. and Swimming
P.E. is on Monday this half term so please ensure that your child has a full P.E kit in school. Children will need pumps for indoor sessions and trainers are good for outdoor sessions. Please ensure all clothing has your child’s name on. Swimming is on a Wednesday and runs for the full year. Please make sure your child comes with a coat every Wednesday regardless of the forecast as hair is still wet when we leave the swimming baths.
We now link all our learning and develop improvements in spelling through personalised spelling journals. These will be sent home on Friday and must be returned on Monday. They need to be in school every day to help the children add words throughout the week.
This will be a variety of Maths, English and occasionally Science. In addition there will be a project homework related to a class topic. Weekly homework will be sent home on Friday and needs to be returned by Wednesday. Reading and discussing a chosen reading book is also an important part of homework. The children have new Reading Records which will be checked on a regular basis. I am encouraging the children to write something regarding the book rather than what pages they have read and would appreciate it if you could also support this by questioning and discussing the book on a regular basis and signing the record when you have done this with your child.
The children should now know all the times tables by the end of year 4. It is such a vital part of maths as it links to other areas of mathematics. We will still be testing and working on them on a weekly basis so please support your child in this area. Rock Stars is still available to help with rapid recall and is also used in secondary schools.
Please provide your child with a small, named water bottle to keep in the classroom. These must have ‘sports caps’ to reduce spillages. These can be purchased at only 70p at the school office. I encourage children to take water bottles home regularly for a thorough wash. Should you prefer to send your child in with a water bottle from home, please ensure that this is clearly labelled.
Please can you send a snack of fruit, vegetable, toast or breadsticks as these are low in salt and sugar.
The only permitted item is a wrist watch (but not one that can receive text messages). Earrings are not part of the school uniform and should never be worn in school.
